The September Meeting took the form of Members' Evening, it is the one monthly meeting of the year when the Members, rather than the committee, organise the evenings programme. This year they had organised for Ann Lawtey, one of the Olympic Games Makers, to come and talk to us. Ann came dressed in her 'uniform' and she told us how she originally volunteered 5 years before the Olympics took place. She told us how the selection process had taken place, how they had been trained and how she was kitted out with her very smart uniform. Ann told us about all the training she had to undertake and about her role as an accreditation checker. This involved checking all documents for competitors, coaches and other people to make ID passes. Ann was based at the rowers village and was told not to speak to the competitors unless they spoke to her. She worked the eek before the opening ceremony and was invited to the technical rehearsal of the ceremony. She was then sworn to secrecy about what she had seen. Ann said it had been a very tiring time, with early mornings and long days but had been very rewarding. The uniform was very practical and comfortable to wear, the trousers were made of a very quick drying and non iron material. The shoes were particularly comfortable and the jacket very lightweight but also folded into its own bag as everything had to be carried all day long. Ann had really enjoyed the experience and urged anyone else thinking of volunteering to do it.
