For our August Meeting Anne Millett, who has been the Community Fund Raising Organiser for Lindsey Lodge Hospice for the past 15 years, talked to us about the Hospice and the work they do. Anne told us how the unit began in 1992 with a capacity for 12 day patients. Since then it has doubled in size and can now accommodate 10 In patients and approximately 14 day patients. They organise various clinics, such as Lymphoedema and generally have 150 people every week. There are 500 volunteers helping in various ways, drivers collecting day patients, receptionists, tea makers etc. The patients can have pamper sessions, hairdresser, manicure, pedicures etc. and receive assessments on their medical needs. There is always a waiting list and because of the nature of the illnesses treated it s very hard to plan when a bed will become vacant.
The Hospice costs £2.48 million a year to run. £525 thousand comes from a grant from the PCC and the rest is raised by events in the community, legacies etc. Anne is very enthusiastic and is responsible for buying the goods which are sold in the Hospice shops.
