We met at the
village hall in July and travelled to The Drainage Board’s offices in Ulceby
where we were met by Trevor Vessey. We all got into a minibus provided by the
drainage board and went to look at a pumping station with a litter grabber and
then we proceeded onto the bank of the River Humber to view another pumping
station.
Situated on Lincolnshire's East Coast, the drainage board are responsible for providing a public service in land drainage and flood protection and the district extends to an area of 11,250 hectares which is formed predominantly of the coastal strip extending from the Humber Bridge southwards to Cleethorpes. When there is lots of water coming off the land for example after heavy rainfall the pumping stations pump the water into the river Humber. Our area is quite unique as we have a mixture of rural and industrial areas to protect. A large proportion of the drainage board’s work involves protecting industrial sites from flooding events. There are many major factories and power stations in the Board's area.
We actually had a really fun evening, learnt lots of interesting things about how drainage is dealt with in our local area (topical after all the flooding last winter), saw local places we otherwise wouldn't have, and had a lot of laughter and chatting along the way.
