Lulu Dillon joined us at our September meeting at the Village Hall and gave a very interesting talk about her walk along the in Spain, known in English as the Way of St. James. Lulu walked 300km in aid of the Walkabout charity along with a group of friends. She told us how she shared a room each night with 20 other walkers at hostels along the way and had to wash her socks etc. out each night and leave them to dry overnight as everything had to be carried in her rucksack. The route is marked by Scallop shells and all walkers carry a shell on their rucksack. Lulu had walked 40-60 km per day, for 13 hours a day for 7 days. She suffered 21 blisters but was determined to finish and needed medical attention afterwards to treat them as they had got infected. Lulu had raised £15,000 in total for the Walkabout Foundation which supplies wheelchairs to people in Kenya. She had been invited to go to Kenya to see the wheelchairs distributed. The project restores dignity, freedom and independence by providing wheelchairs and rehabilitation and allows them to go outside their homes, go to school, work etc. many for the first time.
